Floor Glazing

There are several factors that must be taken into account when using this type of glazing and a professional within this field should always be consulted. The obvious main factor is the glass thickness, in other words the strength of glass and how much weight it can support; this is generally determined by the size of glazing and the amount of traffic it is likely to support. Another main factor is the frame type and how it is secured in place, this should be taken very seriously as a failure in the framework would result in certain injury or even death.
Another consideration should be that if the glass is being walked upon that it may become slippery, in order to alleviate the risk of slipping a special non-slip screen print can be applied; this should also be stated if required as it normally doesn’t come as standard. For more information on screen print see Decorative Glazing.
Floor glazing is generally made up of a glass type called a multi-laminate, this is several layers of glass laminated together using heavy duty PVC interlayer’s that form a single glass pane; it is the same technology that is used for window laminates but on a greater scale.
Floor Glazing can be a major focal point to a building either as floor slabs or staircases; you must always consult a structural engineer to ensure all factors are taken into account.
