Solar Control is a generic name for a family of glasses supplied by various glass manufacturers, this family generally consists of three members, Body Tinted Solar Control, Solar Control Coated and High Performance Solar Control Glasses.

Body Tinted Solar Control

 

Body Tinted Glasses are basically glasses with the 'Colour Built-in'.  This family of glasses rely on Heat Absorption as their Solar Control Method, in other words it slows down the transmittance of heat by soaking up, this absorbed heat then helps to repel additional heat from transmitting through the glass.

 

This method of Solar Control however is limited, for example the light transmission into the building can be restricted especially with some thicker body tints.  Also this form of Solar Control offers No Low Emissivity values, therefore this should be considered on the inner pane (see Introduction/Low Emissivity Glazing)

 

Body Tinted Glasses are normally available in four colours, Bronze, Grey, Green and Blue.

 

Most Body Tinted glasses are available in 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and can be supplied in Annealed, Toughened and Laminated formats.

Solar Control Coated

 

Solar Control Coated are glasses that have an additional heat reflective coating applied.  This family of glasses can consist of either Coated Clear Float or Coated Body Tinted glasses, however it is important not to get these glasses confused with High Performance glazing (see Introduction/High Performance Solar Control) as with Body Tinted they hold No Low Emissivity Values and therefore this should be considered on the inner pane. (see Introduction/Low Emissivity Glazing).
