Spandrel Glazing

Specialists in Commercial Glass Supply

Spandrel Glazing, also known as Ceramic Panels is designed to be used in areas where it is necessary to disguise parts of the building that are deemed unsightly i.e. Floor Slabs, plumbing/electrical ducts and walls.

Spandrel Glazing is normally totally opaque and does not allow any light through, however it must be said that if used in a free standing environment (it can be viewed from both sides) then slight pin holes may appear in the ceramic coating and therefore deemed not suitable for purpose.  If a panel is to be used in a free standing environment we offer a product called Archidea which is ideal for this purpose.  Please See Products Introduction/Decorative Glazing for further information.

In most instances, the colours made available for Spandrel Glazing is very limited and suppliers tend to restrict their 'Standard Colour' range to a basic 8-10 colours.  We, however pride ourselves on being able to offer the RAL colour range.

Having such a large colour range allows for a much greater freedom of building design and can be matched perfectly with coloured vision glazing such as Vancavaâ Laminates (Please see Product Introduction/Decorative Laminate Glazing for further information on the Vancevaâ product).

Spandrel Glazing can be supplied in both Single and Double Glazed formats. Double glazed units

are normally manufactured with the Ceramic coating applied to Face #4 and is applied to the glass prior to the toughening process.  The other pane can consist of nearly any type of glass, from Clear Float, Body Tints to High Performance glasses used to match the appearance of the vision glazing; however all glasses must be toughened due to the possibility of thermal fracture.

As a general rule, Spandrel Glazing does not consist of any Low Emissivity coatings therefore the Centre Pane U-Value is normally 2.7 W/m2K, however an optional Insulation can be applied allowing the U-Value to be drastically improved (0.35 W/m2K subject to the insulation thickness).  The insulation normally is in a Foil Backed format and can be supplied bonded to the unit or encapsulated with an aluminium backing tray, which in turn can be Mill Finished or Polyester Powder Coated.
